History

Considered to be one of the best cigarmakers in Puerto Rico and in the world, and recognized by the Guinness World Book Records for creating the world's longest cigar, Don Patricio Peña has been a pioneer and visionary behind his successful business, Don Rey Cigar.

The art of cigar making has been present in his family for decades and has passed from generation to generation. His first experience with the art of handcrafting cigars came at an early age, when he was 7 years old. Since then, he has been involved in the business of cigar making, working with other well-known cigar companies, such as Arturo Fuentes, as well as creating his own company, Don Rey Cigar. Don Rey, as he is liked to be called in honor of his father and mentor,  Mr. Reinaldo Peña, has lived and worked in other places, but the place he loves the most and has considers it as his second home is the island of Puerto Rico. In a magazine article, Don Peña said: “I lived in Las Vegas for 14 years but while I was there, I missed Puerto Rico so much. Every time I heard a Salsa song or a Ay Bendito! phrase it’s made me miss it more up to a point that right now, I have been living in the island and working with company, Don Rey Cigar for over 30 years.”

Don Rey Cigar careful searches for the finest materials and products to elaborate their cigars. They use five distinctive tobaccos fillers such as seco, ligero, “mild”, banned and wrapper. The first four are found in Puerto Rico but the wrappers come from the Connecticut, Brazil, Cameron and  Habana 2000. Don Rey Cigar offers 22 styles of tobacco such as, el Torpedo, Corona, Pyramid, Churchill, Robusto, Military three color, among other and distinct flavors of cigars, such as vanilla, mango, amaretto, cognac, ect.  Each one is handcrafted and elaborated with care and precision to assure their clients the best cigar experience.

The rigorous process of selecting, elaborating and inspecting the quality of these fine handcrafted cigars have earn Don Rey Cigar a respectable reputation in the cigar industry and an international distinction among cigar aficionados.  Don Rey Cigar has been enjoyed by celebrities, politicians and world leaders. It has been also featured in television shows, from FOX to CNN and has been documented by European broadcasting companies. It has also captured headlines on local and international newspaper and magazines.

Currently, Don Rey Cigar has been preserving the tradition and artistry of cigar making in Puerto Rico and has four stores where visitors as well as cigar aficionado can purchase their products. The main store is located in La Plaza del Mercado de Santurce, also known as La Placita and if you are lucky, you might have a glimpse look on how Don Patricio Peña handcrafts and elaborates these fine cigars. You can also enjoy the exhibition of their longest cigars. This cigar was created in that same store in January 2005 and it measures 62.5 feet and has earned the award of the longest cigar in world given by the Guinness World Book of Records breaking Cuba’s record holder.

In February 2007, he broke the record by creating a cigars that measured 135 feet long. This cigar is in exhibition at their Fort Buchanan Store and was awarded  again as the longest cigar in the world by the Guinness World Book of records and featured on theirr side cover of the 2009 issue. Other stores include Plaza del Mercado of Bayamon and their newest store at San Patricio Plaza Mall.
